EDGE THE MOVIE Screening @ Katarameno Syndromo

Do you really want to miss this? Probably not!

I'd say that EDGE is the most talked-about film of recent times as far as hardcore is concerned, I think probably since American Hardcore. In this case, the focus is not hardcore during the 80s in America, but the analysis of the straight edge hardcore philospohy and morals. IT goes through all basics styles and genres (in a historic kind of way) and interviews many prominent sXe figures of today and yesterday. My favorite part? Ray Cappo (Youth of Today, Shelter etc), of course!

I just think it's really great to have movie screenings like that, about hardcore music and culture here in Greece. It is just something we need, the sort of activity that is not necessarily 100% music-related and helps the scene grow by bringing people together and informing them about the stuff they  listen to, so it's all good. There is so much that can be done from us by us and it is great to see people actually taking the innitiative. So let's go!

SIN NOMBRE - A film to watch!!!

I don't know if the people who read this blog are big on films, but we at TYS surely are, and from what I have seen I believe that hardcore kids do know their flicks and actually watch more than Gangland and Lockdown (even though we love those, too!).

One of the best films I watched this summer is Sin Nombre, a pretty brutal and realistic yet beautiful film. It contains a lot of graphic violence but at the same time shows the sensitive side that even the toughest people have. Ιn other words it walks the thin line between gangster films and love stories, without one single cliche that we usually see in Hollywood films. Even thought the theme has been done before, director and writer Cary Fukunaga has crossed most cinematic lines and has made a truly exceptional and unusual film.

Sin Nombre is essentially the runaway story of a teenager couple, Casper and Sayra. Casper is running away from his own gang, while Sayra travels the long journey of realizing a dream life in the US. They meet by chance under very extreme conditions and start traveling together towards a future that seems  highly unpredictable and inevitably full of trouble. Will they make it? Is there a chance for Casper to stay alive when the odds are all against him and he is constantly being betrayed?

This is Cary Fukunaga's first film, and I can say that this guy knows how to make an chillingly interesting  and at the same time emotional film. Like I said it's not only violence, it contains many nice frames of Guatemala, Mexico and other South American places. It shows the real deal of those places, which seems to be a strong contrast of beauty and harshness. The cinematography is just great (he got an award for it), and I am pretty sure actress Paulina Gaitan will be a world acclaimed star in the future. Go watch and enjoy!!

Good Clean Fun The Movie

I guess you know you're obsessed with what you do, when you wake up waaay early before work just to drink coffee and do a ridiculous amount of 'cut and paste' work for your zine. When this is combined with  having listened to Good Clean Fun's Between Christian Rock and a Hard Place like 3 times in a row before it's even noon, you know something's wrong :P

Anyways, speaking of Good Clean Fun, you know they got a movie out now, right? Mr. Issa,  GCF singer, positive straight edge ambassador, Washington OG scenester and now movie director, is responsible for this. And while I'm not so sure about the contents of this, erm..., romantic comedy, (!?) you should  definitely check out the trailer below to see all these people from the hardcore scene giving funny comments about  GCF and the movie, like Karl from Earth Crisis and Porcell (Youth of Today/Shelter etc): 

Now what I'd really like to see, is a new Good Clean fun record. I guess we're just gonna have to wait for that, but when it happens, I expect nothing less than another energetic positive hardcore masterpiece!

Lost Rockers: the new film from the makers of American Hardcore

Interesting news, everyone! If you liked the awesomeness of the documentary American Hardcore, you should know that its makers are preparing their follow-up film, Lost Rockers. 

History

In 2006, writer Steven Blush and director Paul Rachman joined forces to made a documentary about hardcore in America back in the 80s. It is, in my opinion, one of the best and most thoroughly researched documentaries on hardcore music and culture, with interviews and show clips from bands like Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Minor Threat and countless others. It focuses on the 80-86 period, which really is the period where it all begun and hardcore came into shape. For some incomprehensible reason, the film received quite a bit of criticism from the punk 'media' of the day, but you shouldn't let that bother you at all and definitely check the film out if you already haven't. It offers a lot of insight into this snowballing scene, and of course you get to see your heroes and inspirers tell it like it is!

The 2010 Comeback

So what's new, is that the aforementioned filmmakers have teamed up again, but with a totally different theme this time around:  Lost Rockers. This new film (which as we speak is in its first steps) deals with the darker side of fame. It goes into the lives and minds of people who had the potential, but never quite  made it in the music world. Does it sound familiar? I think that in a way, most of us can identify with a 'lost rocker' of some sort, because we feel like we have something worthwhile to create and gain recognition for, but somehow it never seems to happen..? Well, maybe this film can explain us why! And on a more positive note, Lost Rockers seems like a fascinating documentary because as music lovers, we always want to learn more and more about musicians and how they approach their art form, their lives etc. It doesn't matter so much if they're famous, because fame and quality obviously don't go hand in hand!
