NEVER-TRUST: Bomb the Fucking System!

BAND: Never-Trust
RECORDING: "Bomb Da System" EP
STYLE: Metallic Thrash/Thrashcore
LOCATION: Athens. Greece
Label: Self Released
Website: FB // Youtube

Hell yes! One of my favorite things is the hellish mix of metallic thrash and groovy, no-frills hardcore. I am not talking about no party-thrash punkers who copycat Suicidal, early Slayer and DRI; and I am definitely NOT talking about those brutal hardcore bands who incorporate 1 thrash riff whenever they think it's the cool thing to do.

What I am talking about is bands like Never-Trust, who can write some mean fucking riffs all the way through, and bring the pure thrash aggression with a "straight from the heart" hardcore touch. Ouch! These Athenian badasses pack a ton of mosh but don't forget to kick it with some pure breakneck thrash speed. On the other side, they are not afraid to make a solid hardcore song, but are always careful to pack it with a certain metal/thrash coating. It's up to you to find out which is their style exactly, but one thing's for sure: they know how to do what they do.

From what I know, these fellas have changed singers recently, which - judging from a live performance I saw them at recently - can be a good thing. The guy on this recording has a nice growl but doesn't totally have that "extra something" compared to the many hardcore/metal singers of today. What Never-Trust need is a frontman whose voice and style can really match the sheer intensity and streetwise aggression that their music already produces. However, I am sure they are now on the right track with this!

Keep an eye out for this up & coming thrashcore machine because they're gonna hit u hard!!!

FAITHREAT - "Thrashing with the Stars" EP Review

Genre: Crossover/Thrashcore
Location: Volos, Greece
Band Website: Bandcamp, Facebook
Label Websites: n/a

Released in the middle of fuckin' winter, here comes a 7inch release from the 5 stooges of Faithreat that reminds us there's still summer in our hearts!!

Co-released by 4 labels in 350 hand-numbered copies, there're no real words to describe this ep of theirs (I'd say PENIKUFESIN, ha-ha!), with the band to be inducted to Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame after all the fuss ends! Rumors are circulating that, initially, Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal were to write the review for the 7", but due to insurmountable differences and terrible disagreement they started trashing everything up with roundhouse kicks, so the band called on me to salvage the situation once again!

Let's get a little serious there for a while... The 8-song ep is aptly titled Thrashing with the Stars. Ιt consists of musical leftovers from the band's auditions for "Dancing with the Stars" [-We said, serious!!-Oh, ok…]. As you can tell, it's dedicated to movie characters who marked our childhood and continue to haunt our lives, such as Steven Seagal ("Unstoppable Force"), Chuck Norris ("Man or God?"), Mitch Buchannon and Robocop ("Iron Bin"). It also contains a Christmas debunking of the myth of Santa Claus, this corporate-created bearded man, a fuck-off to posers ("Meatballs") and my personal best, "Hairless Charm", dedicated to mighty fuckin' Tsakonas, the favorite 80's cult Greek comedian! No need to explain about him, he's already a legend!

Regarding the music: We got eight fierce short songs that really take no prisoners!! Straight to the face, kick-ass thrashcore / crossover that leaves you begging for more. Fast and intense, riffs cut like a razor, vocals sound just right and the production kills! Thumbs up also for the collage cover and gremlin artwork, courtesy once more of the notorious P. Ntolas. Overall, the ep is a nice foretaste of the band's full length to come, hopefully after the end of the world (12-12-12). Yeah you jive turkeys, Faithreat will survive the blast, cause they are approved by Chuck Norris himself! Highly recommended for fans of Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I., Vitamin X, R.A.M.B.O. and the like.

That's pretty much all. I'd like to suggest that a free copy of the 7” along with a thank-you letter be sent to mr. Tsakonas, for the endless laughter he's been offering us all this time with his hilarious acting!

Enjoy life and thrash' em all,
Leonidas "For Those About to Mosh" (again)

Mental Waste - "Meltdown" (self-released)

Genre: Raw hardcore/Fastcore
Country: Salinas, USA
Band website: bandcamp
Label: -

Mental Waste is the type of band that brings a wonderful combination of the extreme and the catchy; and I don't only mean that as far as the music goes, but also in relation to the artwork and the overall feel they give off as a band. Even though they play some pretty mean fastcore with grindcore passages, they manage to come off as listenable, straightforward and rather punky overall.

Usually when we use the terms grind and/or fastcore in this zine we are talking of crusty bands who usually flirt - even a little - with metal. This is not the case with Mental Waste, who deliver their short hardcore blasts without even giving a nod to the metal format. What we have here are simple but effective riffs backed by machine gun drumming and an pissed of vocalist. All of the 10 songs in this recording (except the last number) are below the one-minute mark, but they are so potent and so much stuff happens, that you think they have lasted for more.

As I mentioned above, the vocals sound pretty fucking angry but while the vocalist screams and shouts, he doesn't exactly growl. This is another fact about Mental Waste being closer to punky thrash and of course another clue as to whether this is your type of stuff. Fans of he Maximum RNR-school, who call fasctore "thrash" will definitely dig this record and will play it loud on their mp3s, while biking down the road going to the DIY show. But rest assured, there are many interesting ideas, especially in those slow, mini mosh parts which last only for a few seconds before the insanity starts again!

Essentially, this is pissed off hardcore for pissed of HC kids who have escaped the chugga-chugga (which I love, personally) sound and are looking for something rawer and unprocessed. The good thing about Mental Waste is that they don't copy any of the famous bands of the genre, but actually do their own thing while paying respect to the roots (Heresy, Siege, Ripcord, Dropdead etc), and of course with a newer, fatter sound! Eat this up, vegan thraskids with bikes!

Thrash Friday: LEGION OF PARASITES

Legion of Parasites was a very noisy UK band that formed in 1981 and released three albums and an ep. Although they truly belonged in the political, crusty punk hardcore scene of their time, their sound is undeniably much closer to a proto-metal thrash sound that still sounds heavy and disturbing some 30 years later. All their recordings are different from each other, meaning that the production is totally different and that the band also fluctuated back and forth from metallic punk to the more traditional UK82 and anarchopunk sounds. This band has gone largely unnoticed throughout the history of heavy music, but I think that their contribution should be reconsidered and credited. Thrash it up with some original old school UK necro sound!

For some sparse info, you can visit www.myspace.com/legionofparasites. Moreover, the song below has been uploaded straight from vinyl (not by us) and it sounds just like it should, so enjoy!

Review: HEADED FOR DISASTER: "Jellyfish" EP (Self-Released)

Right from the start, Headed for Disaster come at you swinging like a rabid bear that hasn't eaten for 10 days. They bust out one metallic punk hymn after the other, landing direct hooks on your already swollen head from too much extreme music. Yes, these guys are noise afficcionados and you gotta love them, really.

Now I should mention at first that these guys are Swedes; and in a way, this monstrous ball of aggression still wears the mark of this rock n roll generator of a country. The musicianship is ultra tight and way above average, I mean these guys can PLAY. They have one foot firmly rooted in 80s aggressive hardcore/punk, but at the same time embellish their sound with lots and lots of icing: straight up thrash, pure rock n roll touches, upbeat skater California punk (RKL, Suicidal Tendencies etc), Motorhead crusty dirt, Swedish punk n roll, epic heavy metal guitar harmonies, some melodic singing coupled with sparse crust/death metal growls, some hard rock singalongs in there somewhere too, and the list goes on. I mean... how do they pull it off? This sounds totally consistent yet it is all over the place!

This punk thrash outfit is like a huge lizard wearing an ST shirt and a backwards baseball cap, skating off a 40ft  ramp with a cola in its hand, grinning in your ugly face. As the name says, destruction and disaster is the game here. This is real flaming rock n roll, by people who must live it in order to play it so well. These tunes are so hard and so tight, and have the perfect sense of urgency and emotion. What is more, Headed for Disaster have the power and ability to transmit this feeling to the listener, Yes... good music is always infectious and contagious and I'm glad to have listened to this.

The song below is from an older 2010 release, but I put it up here cause the song is rad and cause the cover for this video simply rules.

Record Reviews: SSS "Problems to the Answer" (Earache Records)

SSS are a bunch of English hardcore dudes who probably loved their skateboards and thrash too much. They have been delivering blistering crossover thrashcore since the late 00s and have been doing it better than many 'thrash revival' muppets. They have a new album on Earache Records, which is a total scorcher! Review by Rigas (rigalbigal [at] yahoo [dot] com).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you think there is a gap between NYHC, fast oldschool trash metal, crossover, fastcore and grind? Well, SSS (meaning Short Sharp Shock – not Super SS or other nazi stuff) are filling this niche pretty well with their 3rd full length. No fancy stuff, no polished production - just music straight in your face and I appreciate that. These guys from Liverpool, UK manage to pack 25 songs in 41 minutes, hence most of the numbers are less than 2 minutes long.

The first song ‘The First Kill’ starts in an oldschoool Crossover / thrash manner akin to SOD, Whiplash, Slayer and Dark Angel. The vocals are shouted, reminding me Billy Milano (SOD), Roger Miret (Agnostic Front) and a bit of Ray Cappo (Youth of Today) but also Benediction in the few death metal growls. The second song is a short r’n’r d-beat tune while the third is a 15 second fastcore blast reminiscent of Cause for Alarm (self-titled 7’’), but also newer acts like early Bratpack. The fourth song ‘Laughing leads to crying’ is again somewhere between crust and NYHC while the following ‘White bread’ is a grindcore injection. Obviously, there is quite some variation between tracks. I heard even a Suicidal Tendencies style crossover in ‘Tales out of school’. ‘Direct Action’ could be the last snap before activists hit the streets! :) The last song ‘Strangenotes’ is a long experimental closer for the album, but it did not impress me.

Overall, although Problems to the Answer is not totally groundbreaking, it has a lot of stimulating moments like ‘Foreign Body Plot’ which is really a punk-thrash-crust crossover or the throwback thrash of ‘Sick Pleasures’. The vocals are fitting all needs of the songs, the bass is quite pronounced & pummeling and the music is altogether well-executed. SSS seem to possess a vast knowledge of U.S. hardcore punk and everything crossover plus they put a good deal of effort in this release, taking care of the songwriting and the general flow of the record.

Compared to their previous releases, this time they come with more speed (grind!), tempo shifts and variety, something which is positive. I think crossover thrashing skaters will appreciate this release as it is easy-to-follow straight music. Don’t leave your brains on the pavement! SSS continue their crossover revival discography carry keeping the tradition of crossover in the new age, where ‘the armies of punk rock and thrash metal finally come together into a unified front bent on exposing social injustice and political hypocrisy’.

News: SUICIDAL TENDENCIES (Metalsucks interview, new Cyco Miko record & more)

Old school thrash/hardcore legends SUICIDAL TENDENCIES seem to be at full force after the long hiatus which lasted during most of the 00s. Their 2010  comeback record No Mercy Fool! The Suicidal Family is still fresh as ST plays short tours and one-off shows sponsored by skateboard company, Vans. Moreover, Mike Muir aka Cyco Miko (S.T.'s singer and certified nut) is releasing a new personal album, which we'll make sure to review here very very soon.

For more info on Suicidal in 2011, check this cool interview on Metalsucks. It's a long and detailed interview which provides a lot of insight on this crazy but charismatic musician's life, mind and attitude. Finally, don't forget to click below and see the new video for the re-recorded super thrash classic "I Feel Your Pain" which has just been released! 2011 reallys seems to be "year of the Cyco", as ST themselves put it!

Featured Band: Denial Fiend - Deathly Thrashed into a Horror Holocaust

Simply put, Denial Fiend is a bunch of crazy fuckers who destroy the world with their awesomely evil death/thrash metal. I mean we all listen to a lot of metal and hardcore and whatnot, but every now and then we find a band that really stands apart due to its heaviness/originality, and Denial Fiend seem to have both of these factors in check. Also, if you are sick and tired of hearing a certain Municipal Waste come up whenever the term "thrash" is mentioned, maybe it is a good idea to start supporting these fellows here.

Denial Fiend packs a ton of energy and has that extreme death thrash sound that was forsaken somewhere in the annals of extreme music history. They have the excessive double bass drum use and the sick guitar riffs, but they also manage to keep it extreme, catchy and fun. Because we should let it be known that when we say thrash, we mean something heavy and extreme and not just sped up punk with stupid lyrics and no shock value. So remove the beer/party thrash punk from your mind and get into the real, original, evil thrash about death and destruction!

http://www.facebook.com/denialfiendband

We should also mention that the song posted above from new album Horror Holocaust features Denial Fiend's new singer, who is no other than the legendary Accused's Blaine Cook. For an even heavier, more guttural Denial Fiend, check the band's older album They Rise.

LEGACY - "First Assault" - Demo Review

Yes goddamn it! What we have here is some serious evil metal by guys who have put out something totally original and fun, perhaps without even realizing it.

Legacy are from Italy and play a mixture of monstrous, punky deathrash (yes, deathrash!) with some classic, cult-status metal influences that will crush your skull before you even realize it.

The production isn't perfect and the overall outcome is by no means 'pro' but who cares about that shit. There are many 'pro' underground bands and most of them are boring. These guys may have not mastered the english accent, but they have mastered the 'fuck you' attitude.

Legacy come at you like a tasmanian devil, with four songs filled with razor-sharp guitars, quick tempos and aggressive crossover death metal vocals. The influences come from stuff like Death (especially), Destruction, Nuclear Assault, Annihilator and many others -- but only the good stuff. I want to give a thumbs up to the classic metal influences from bands like Manilla Road, King Diamond, Death SS, Paul Chain and other metal beasts of the past!

It is almost hard to believe that there are people out there who still play metal like this. It's like they just busted out the time capsule they entered back in '85 or something. This is awesome; it's evil, it's mean, it's raw, it's how metal should be! There is not one single new age element in this demo, and this is something which makes it VERY new age. You know?

Municipal Waste - A Wasted Article

Here is a nice guest article on Municipal Waste, a band that we are pretty sure you have heard of if you listen to heavy music at all. This following piece, which could be considered a sort of tribute to the lords of punk party thrash, was submitted to TYS by my good friend and band-mate, Sergios. Dude knows all about thrash and death metal, so read on and see what you find out about these crazy thrash revival kings! Enjoy!--Fotis TYS

Hailing from the parking-spaces of shopping malls in Richmond, Virginia, speed metal punks Municipal Waste guarantee an explosive atmosphere in every record they have laid down so far. But hang on; before we really get into it, let’s trace the roots of this modern day phenomenon. Back in the day, Richmond was called Powhatan, named after the Indian tribe that resided in the area and around. It had an outstanding natural beauty, was rich in resources and definitely pretty much quiet (or at least we suppose). Powhatan was a perfect place for chilling and fun. Maybe this has something to do with our modern music thrashing “Indians” (thumbs up to Anthrax), who knows.

We believe that if you want to get a good grasp of a band you should look at its background, culture, environment etc. Surely all of us when we were young were searching each tiny bit of info we could get from CD booklets in the pre-internet era and talk about it with our friends. Those were the good old days, judging a band to be cool or not from their t-shirts in the back cover photo. I mean c’mon “this guy is wearing a Possessed t-shirt, they should be good lads and the music should be amazing!”. You could call us naive, romantic or whatever.

Municipal Waste formed back in 2000 and played their first show on New Years Eve just before 2001 was replacing 2000. How cool is that? From the band’s current line up, only Ryan Waste and Tony Foresta (guitars and vox respectively) were there, so we could say they are the core of Municipal Waste. Add Land Phil molesting the bass and last but not least Dave Witte on drums, and you got the rest of the wheels of this monstrous thrashing machine.

What can you say about Dave Witte, the guy is a legend. Personally, I regard him as one of the most influential and amazing drummers I‘ve ever listened to. His style is like open heart surgery, no mistakes – deadly precise.  In all the bands he played it was only mayhem, death and destruction. I kindly suggest that you check him out in Discordance Axis, Burnt by the Sun, Human Remains and East West- Blast Test among others. All these aforementioned bands have nothing to do with the style that Municipal Waste prefer to spread all around, but still you should give them a go. Judging from his interviews, he also seems like a pretty cool and dedicated guy. His playing style in Discordance Axis and Human Remains took him extreme music miles ahead and I think that all of us speed and intensity freaks should at least give him the credits and respect.

Having said that, Land Phil, the bearded bandana guy behind the bass flicks is also active in other bands. He plays in a humoristic death metal band, called Cannabis Corpse. In their own words: “Cannabis corpse was formed in the summer of 2006 as a way to express our love of smoking weed and listening to Cannibal Corpse”. Song titles like “Staring through My Eyes That Are Red” or “Reefer Stashed Place” or even “Addicted to Hash in a Tin” pretty much points out what you should expect. Who said that death metal is not fun, it is mostly about fun!

Ryan Waste has himself an old school heavy metal project called Volture which is not so big news but anyway. He is the mastermind behind the axeripping riffs of the Waste so we should say some stuff about him. Plus he is a founding member. Speaking of that, last but not least Tony Foresta is the bringer of doom with his 2 sentences per second attacks, funny faces, wicked poses and all around on stage thrashing. He is also participating in a hardcore project named No Friends which are pretty cool! He loves football and has a “PIZZA” lip tattoo.

You can tell that until know we only cared about sideprojekts, ex bands, heritage and everything apart Municipal Waste. Well that might be true, but I (we) don’t think that we should tell you the obvious. You don’t need us to tell you how great and awesome Municipal Waste are. You already know that! Thus we will complete this piece with the top-5 reasons why one should get his hand on these guys’ releases, if hasn’t yet done so.

1. Kurt Russel is a really huge actor! Who would argue against? I mean, Escape from LA/NY, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing or even that movie that his wife was kidnapped from rednecks and he was a truck driver – these are masterpieces! The Waste seem to have that point of view to, Tango and Thrash is a homage to the – as the pun states- Tango and Cash movie, featuring Kurt along Sylvester Stalone. Who hasn’t seen that? Plus the whole Municipal Waste side of the split (with Bad Acid Trip) is a general homage to Kurt Russel (being also on the cover).

2. Beer cans! The sound of a beer can opening is surely close to paradise for some of us. That sound means that in a few seconds you will be swallowing that divine thing that beer is. Beer drinkers raise your cans/bottles/glasses and listen to that sound in a couple of Waste’s songs! We won’t tell you who they are, find them yourself (straight edge kids just ignore the above paragraph and let's just drink coke to MW and mosh our heads off nice and sober-ed:P).

3. Fun! Every band should in our opinion have always a touch of fun and humor, I mean c’mon even if your lyrics are about horror movies or such shit, it is fun since you overuse it. Just like Cannibal Corpse’s lyrics, they are funny like low budget splatter films (which I am not a fan of, but you get my point). Too much ketchup makes you laugh. Well if you want to pay a tribute to 80s horror b-movies then this is fun! Song titles like The Thing or Terror Shark or Toxic Revolution among others with cover artwork that is in line with this golden era proves the point.

4. Live! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend their show here in Athens or anywhere else. I am aware of what happened here, no need to talk about this now. But it seems to me after watching their dvd, many videos in youtube and from friends' words, that they are really energetic and give 100% when they perform live! Well, that’s a big plus for a band! Trampoline stage dives, circle pits, moshing, stage dives on bodyboards (you know the board that Hobie Buchannon of Baywatch used to have when he was a teenager) is the norm in a MW show.

5. Math! 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321. That’s a fact! Last reason why to love these guyz is that they kind of brought back the glory of the thrashing 80s, an era that is far too much important for thrash/death metal/hardcore, you name it. If this is not good enough for you or if you going to blah blah about how much better other bands are, or how overrated Municipal Waste are, or how fake they are, or how Toxic Holocaust are better (they are truly great in my opinion), or if it is not Razor then it ain’t thrash, then this piece is not for you.

Last but not least, I wanna thank Fotis and TYS for giving me a place to express my thoughts, respect!

P.S. In Chuck’s words: Support music, not rumors.

Faithreat - "Back To The Pit" album review

I don’t think I’ve heard another Greek Thrashcore band, let alone a Greek band with good lyrics and a positive message!

That’s how Faithreat goes out; Fast and straight to the point, no messing about whatsoever! And these fellas don’t beat about the bush musically: you get your first mosh -break just on 0:19 of the first song, while John (the singer) proudly yells: Thrash for yourself, not for your fucking sponsor! How cool is that?

Also, let’s make sure this is not your mama’s Municipal Waste. OK, maybe some similarities can be drawn, but Faithreat is not in the copy-cat band category, as they owe more to DRI and even the Haunted (!) than they do to the aforementioned band. I can hear a lot of Slayer-ic guitar harmonies, which rules, of course, but also a definite two-step Hardcore sound (i.e. breaks, mosh-parts) that changes the whole game. After all, some of these guys used to play in the defunct all-school Hardcore band Disharmonic, so you could say they have cut their teeth doing this Hardcore s*it.

I have to give props for the very good production sound, which is really fat and you can hear everything. For example, the double-bass pedal with its modest but very effective use!

What I liked more about this album is the way certain words or phrases are spat in a spoken-word style over the music, kind of like.. Youth of Today, or Gorilla Biscuits maybe!? You know, phrases that have an extra meaning and stand out, and push the whole song forward. It's nice to hear a heartfelt posi quote while having your face melted by the extra-distorted bass! This is the type of s*it that makes exceptional bands. Moreover, the lyrics are simple, sincere, positive on the whole, and with something that comes out as an honest worry for this world, nature, wars etc. You know how it shows when some people just say it, while others truly mean it, and I firmly believe that Faithreat falls into the second category.
