Another Old School Pic: Choke, Slapshot

I still wonder what the kids out there think about Slapshot. Are they one of the hardcore bands you love to hate? Is Jack Kelly (Choke) the frontman with the most recognizable voice in hardcore or is he just someone who pisses you off? Do you even recognize the importance of Choke and co. for the formation of what we call obnoxious, ignorant straight edge hardcore? And will they put another record out!? I don't know guys... I personally grew up listening to Slapshot since  Old Tyme Hardcore came out when I was a 16-year old dweeb. For me, they are one of the top-10 hardcore bands of all time for sure. They always had the 'in your face' factor switched up to 10, and that's why I respect them so much, no matter what people say.

Another Old School Pic: Strung Out, Rocking Out

Looking back at more than half my life, I realize how I grew up looking at hardcore and punk bands' photos. No matter what people say about punk being only about the music and the message, I know that aesthetics is also another important aspect of it. In the same way other kids grew up admiring athletes or models, the people I always looked up to were the musicians from my favorite bands. And it has always been great to see how the people whose music I loved so much looked pretty much just like me. It made me feel inspired, like I could be doing the same thing one day.

I just love it when a moment in punk is captured in a pic, and I will never stop checking out this awesome form of, well... art. I guess this simple Strung Out snap says it all, really. It's all about fun, friendship and wigging out!

No matter what happens in this world, there will only be *one* Duane Peters. An old school skater and punk rocker extraordinaire, how can you not love this guy!? Still making music, still skating (instead of sitting with his slippers on reading the sports pages like so many other punk 'legends'). So crank up Back to the Laundromat and let it rip!

AFI cont'd (Another Old School Pic)

A couple of days ago we did a post on Davey Havok and AFI; a TYS friend was kind enough to send us this old school flyer from a Danzig / Samhain* concert from waaaay back in the day (that's 1999!!!!) Enjoy and keep it grim!

* legendary, awesome goth / punk band, reunited during the late 90s/early 00s. Members of Samhain went on to create Son of Sam with Davey Havok on vocals.
